Birch Bark Crafts for Youth - South Ridge
Birch bark (Wiigwaas) is one of the most versatile and culturally significant materials in the northern forest, traditionally used for everything from canoes to storage baskets (makakoon). In this hands-on workshop, participants step away from modern plastics and connect with natural, sustainable materials. Students will learn the cultural protocols of harvesting, the physical properties of the bark, and the traditional techniques used to fold, shape, and stitch the material into a beautiful, functional piece of art. Class includes the story of how the birch bark got its marks, Ojibwe traditional uses of birch trees, and a simple overview of birch tree physiology.

Boozhoo,
My name is Darren Landgren and I am from Nett Lake, Minnesota. I am an enrolled member of the Bois Forte Band of Chippewa. I currently work as the American Indian Coordinator for Chisholm ISD 695 and as a temporary adjunct introduction to welding instructor for Minnesota North College. I am also currently enrolled at Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College for Ojibwe language classes, and I am pursuing my Class A commercial driver's license and Associate of Arts Degree (almost done!).
I have two wonderful children in elementary and high school, and I enjoy volunteering in my community and through United Way. I am blessed to have the opportunity to be employed doing what I love and to share my two passions in life with others.
